What Are The Benefits And Risks Of Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy does not offer guaranteed outcomes. However, the goal is to achieve positive shifts in both behaviors and emotions, which usually occurs when clients are willing to make indicated changes. Therapy can have many potential benefits, including improved functioning, increased coping resources, improved self-worth, and the preservation and enhancement of meaningful relationships.

Additionally, therapy can help bolster your coping skills and shift unhealthy patterns. There can be a reduction of negative symptoms such as stress, anxiety, depression, panic and other discomforts.  Because therapy frequently includes discussing distressing aspects of your life or history, you may uncover feelings such as guilt, fear, anger, sadness, shame, and loneliness. However, psychotherapy can equip you with the tools and skills to be able to identify, accept, and work through many of these feelings, reframing the process as developmental growth that builds strength and resilience.
